Fidalgo Island
'At Home On Fidalgo' preserves island's history -- and trees

BEVERLY CRICHFIELD,
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

ANACORTES -- Evelyn Adams says there isn't much she hasn't learned to like about Fidalgo Island -- the tree-covered hills teeming with wildlife, rocky shorelines and a picturesque downtown with old-fashioned charm. click here for full story

Whale Watching
A whale of an adventure can be had on Westport charters

DARREN SAMUELSOHN,
THE OLYMPIAN

WESTPORT -- There's silence save for the dim hum of an idling boat motor. Seventeen human beings shift position on the 40-foot Sea Duchess. Cameras are poised, fingers nuzzling the shutter release. click here for full story

At The Coast
Diversions tempt visitors to Long Beach Peninsula

JOHN DELEVA, FOR THE OLYMPIAN

LONG BEACH -- As a kid, I couldn't look up anything in the encyclopedia without making a few stops along the way. En route to finding, say, Roosevelt, I'd stumble through Rhode Island, or Rio de Janeiro. That same process of diversion seems to happen whenever I visit the Long Beach peninsula: kites en route to cranberries, Jake the Alligator Man before Lewis and Clark. click here for full story

Fly Fishing
Hooked on fly fishing
Lakes and streams teem with fish hungry for the crafty angler's lure

CHESTER ALLEN, THE OLYMPIAN

TUMWATER -- On a warm, golden Friday last fall, I pulled into Tumwater Falls Park to eat my lunch. click here for full story

Mt St. Helens
Mount St. Helens' recovery apparent on monument trails

DARREN SAMUELSOHN, THE OLYMPIAN

MOUNT ST. HELENS -- Doris Lodwig relishes the changes that this famous volcano has undergone every year since its 1980 eruption. click here for full story

Oregon
Visit the Klootchy Creek Giant en route to Oregon coast

JEFF BARNARD, THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

SEASIDE, Ore. -- Tour buses stop by it, a greeting card once featured it, and a retired Salem barber reveres it.

But look on most maps or ask most people what the Klootchy Creek Giant is, and you are likely to come up empty. click here for full story

Storm Watching
Find foul-weather fun on storm-tossed Vancouver Island

LAURA BLY, GANNETT NEWS SERVICE

TOFINO, British Columbia -- To old-timers who've weathered decades of tempests along the wild side of Canada's Vancouver Island, the weekend squall is barely worth hauling out the oilskins and duck boots: a bout of light snow, mixed with hail. Spitting rain, punctuated by implausibly blue skies. Ten-foot seas with heavy southwest swells, and wind gusts topping 70 mph. click here for full story

Surfing
Everybody's gone surfing at 'Malibu of the Northwest'

DARREN SAMUELSOHN, THE OLYMPIAN

WESTPORT -- Surf's up, and everybody's invited. Come beginners and experts. Come politicians, city folks, Canadians, teens and computer whizzes. click here for full story
